After the planning, anticipation, and excitement of your wedding, your honeymoon is a chance to relax and enjoy quality time together. Regardless of your destination, reading together is a great way to unwind. My husband, Bryan, and I are big readers. When I considered some of our favorite books, I realized that many of them are about journeys, both literal and figurative. As the first stop in the journey of your marriage, your honeymoon is the perfect time to read books about new beginnings. Read on for my “his and hers” picks, and feel free to share – that’s a big part of marriage, after all!

Books to Read on Your Honeymoon for Him

A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson – Bryson’s autobiographical account of his journey on the Appalachian Trail is laugh-out-loud funny, touching, and life-affirming.

Armada by Ernest Cline – Pop culture references abound in this science fiction tale about a gamer who finds himself in a new reality. One where he has to save the world from alien invaders.

Chasing Space: An Astronaut’s Story of Grit, Grace, and Second Chances by Leland Melvin – Lynchburg’s own Leland Melvin, engineer and former NASA astronaut and NFL wide receiver, overcame huge setbacks before making it to space. Read about his many journeys in this heartfelt and inspirational memoir.

The Martian by Andy Weir – This fictional survival story set on Mars is a nail-biter. It’s also hilarious and highly practical. The movie is great, but the book is even better.

Books to Read on Your Honeymoon for Her

Under the Tuscan Sun: At Home in Italy by Frances Mayes – Mayes, who attended Randolph College, is a food-and-travel writer. Her memoir, which was adapted into a popular film starring Diane Lane, is a charming and richly-detailed account of her journey to Tuscany and her restoration of an abandoned villa there.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik – In this fantasy tale, beautiful and talented young women from a quiet village are selected every ten years to serve the seemingly dangerous wizard who protects the village from dark forces. When an unlikely young woman is selected, she has no idea how much her life is about to change.

Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri – Although each beautifully-written short story in this collection is about a different set of characters, a common thread of change – and the many ways we adjust to that change – runs through all of them.

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon – When it comes to journeys, time travel is the most dramatic sort you can take. In this epic novel that is part historical fiction, part romance, and part adventure, a WWII nurse travels through time and falls in love with a dashing man in 18th century Scotland.
