Travel Themed E-session – Will & Kaitlin

Engagement sessions are so fun! They are a great way for a couple to express themselves and play with a theme (or not!) and just be themselves. They are also the perfect way for a couple to get to know their photographer (and vice versa) before the wedding day. Truly, this makes the wedding day photography so much more of a breeze when your photographer knows your personalities and how you work together – especially in front of the camera.

For all of you photographers out there, I would also like to use this session as a case study for you. I receive many, many, many submissions for e-sessions. Truthfully, I reject quite a few of them based on the fact that they are filled with photos of an adorable couple smiling and being affectionate. Wait, whoa, what?? Isn’t that what an engagement session is all about??? Well, yes… and no when it comes to getting things onto blogs and such. Let me explain!

Yes, the engagement session IS all about the couple. That is the main goal. They want photos of themselves in love. Ones that they can use for save the dates, Facebook profiles and to show their grandchildren some day. Yes, yes and more yes. That is absolutely perfect. BUT when it comes to submitting to a blog, photo after photo of smiling couple after smiling couple gets – wait for it (gasp!) – mundane. Ah, there I said it! When I am looking at your photos, it is just like combing through a wedding submission in the fact that it’s all in the details. So, for the couple (which is WAY more important than what I am looking for), smiling, kisses and hugs are what the photos should be all about.

Ok, hit the *pause* button. That may sound super stressful to think about along with planning outfits, hair, makeup, location, date, time and all else that goes into a fun engagement session. I have two great solutions for you and both involve the photographer teaming up and doing a little (or a lotta) bit of planning with the couple.

One is to just immerse yourself in your surroundings. Going downtown for an e-session? Grab coffee and take photos of the cup, her ring as she holds the cup and the couple walking downtown past shops (or even window shopping) as they hold their coffee. Take photos of little things… her shoes, their hands holding each other, and the doorknob (if interesting) of the location you are hitting up. Just check out the surroundings and see what is naturally in the area to add to the overall feel of the session.

Another idea is to team up with an expert, which is what Alina of Alina Thomas Photography did. The setting that was created by Amy of I Do Events is so impeccable… and crafty! I adore the things made out of maps. The flags are too cute, and the flowers made out of maps are so sweet. Not to mention the plethora of luggage. This duo created a lovely setting for Will and Kaitlin to have their session. And YES, their session includes hugs and kisses (behind a map, love it!). I’m also a complete sucker for globes. There is just SO much to love about this session!

So, without further due, I want you to immerse yourself in this beautiful, fun engagement session full of yes ideas, but most importantly, love. Enjoy!
